How to Close the House
You will keep your heating costs at a minimal and prevent
pipes from freezing
and rupturing by following this simple checklist and directions:
- Close all windows on both floors.
- Close every door in the house
except the two bathroom doors.
- Set gas unit thermostats for both fireplaces to a 55° setting.
- If necessary, also insure that flame is adjusted to full on.
- Insure the "Always On" switch (right side lower unit only) is
OFF
- Set wall-heating units in both bathrooms to the
LOW
setting.
- Set wall-heating units in top floor kitchen and basement living room to
LOW.
- Leave the living room wall thermostats (for baseboard heating units) on a 50°
setting. Go higher during the really sub-zero temperatures in mid-winter.
- Shut off the heat in all bedrooms, then close bedroom doors.
- Check there are no bedclothes or other items leaning against baseboard heating. This can cause a fire.
- Remove all trash from the premises.
- Check for running water. Be sure toilets have shut off.
- Possibly shut off water to minimize damage should a pipe freeze. See discussion later in this book.
These steps will insure no pipes freeze and no fires flare up while you are away, and there will be no flooding to greet you when you return.
